Steampunk Inspired shoot
We recently held a workshop at the studio with a fantastic model Carla Monaco with a steampunk theme. http://www.carlamonaco.co.uk/
I used a theatrical backdrop and tried to give a dramatic look to the image.
The steampunk theme and styling was obtained by using period clothing by Phaze Clothing

All lighting used was by Bowens http://www.bowensdirect.com/

Lighting diagram below shows large softbox with waffles to give soft directional light from the left of camera. A 500 head with standard reflector and medium grid pointed onto backgound set at minimum power to just give detail in backdrop, orange gel attached. I also used a head with grids pointing at the back of the model to give separation from backdrop

Studio Water Shoot
Water shoot in the studio.
The shot below was taken in Bananastudio on a specially constructed set for the shoot. We achieved the dramatic lighting with 2 direct heads from behind with coloured gels to give a rim light effect.
The front light was with a beauty dish from above pointing down towards the model. The backlighting was needed to record the water drops and splashes. The camera was set on the highest sync speed of 160th of a second at F5.6
The resulting shot captures the colours and splashes of the water and makes for a dramatic shot. All lighting used was by Bowens http://www.bowensdirect.com/

Hairdressing Shots
The main focus of hair shots is obviously the hair, and one of the first lights added was the hair light.
This Bowens 500 head with standard 7" reflector was placed on a boom arm to give me freedom to move it around the top of the hair.
The front light on the models face was also a Bowens 500 head with snoot to give a controlled area lighting the face and putting texture in the hair. This gives a distinct highlight in the models eyes.
The last light was a background effect light pointed towards the black background paper and just enough power to lift the paper to a dark grey halo.
The shot was taken on Hassleblad H3 with 150 mm lens tethered to imac

Kaye Davia Workshop lighting basics
A couple of lighting techniques from a recent Bananastudio workshop featuring Kaye Davia.
The lighting used on these shots was Bowens gemini 500 with Bowens supersoft 600 attachement.
The supersoft is double diffused and gives a really good directional soft light.
A small direct head with a narrow grid / honeycomb was used as a kicker light to rim light the model. The next shot was using the 75° Softlite Reflector which gives a smaller catchlight in the eye and slightly harder light.

Hairdressing / Fashion Lighting technique
This lighting techniques was used for our entry for 2012 Matrix Destination Fame competition where our entry finished in the top 12 in the UK.
The lighting for the model was 2 softboxes either side of the model, to light both sides of the face. The softboxes are pointed slightly towards the camera and masked by 2 polyboards (black side out) Our polyboards are 8' x 4' painted white on one side and black on the other side.
The black polyboards stop the light reflecting back into the subject and gives the dark centre in the models face.
The blue background was created using two direct heads pointing towards it with light blue gels, onto white colorama paper.
The last effect light is a head directly behind the models head pointing through the umbrella towards the camera.
The light is approx 1m from the model.

Lighting techniques for figure works or fine art nude.
A fantastic techniques for dance. figure or fine art nude. This technique was shown by John Tisbury at the Bananastudio Fine art nude workshop a while ago. http://www.johntisbury.co.uk/
The techniques is very simple and uses 2 Lencarta heads with wide honeycoms or grids. The lights are placed either side of your subject at equal distance from the subject and at the same power settings.
I set the lights to give f8 at 100 iso.
I also used pixel king triggers to give me sync speed of 1/2000 sec in order to freeze the subject when jumping. Shot on Canon 7d with 17-50 mm Tamron 2.8 ,All lighting used was by Bowens http://www.bowensdirect.com/
